In a unique educational event, Musicians from the U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters chorus imparted their knowledge to the vocal students of Liberty University. Musician 1st Class Nathaniel Buttram, originally from Camdenton, Missouri, led a masterclass during the group’s national tour in 2024. The masterclass showcased the Navy Band's commitment to educational outreach through their Music in the Schools programs.

Creating Educational Opportunities

The masterclass at Liberty University is part of a larger effort by the United States Navy Band to reach out to students at various educational levels. From kindergarteners to college undergraduates, these programs foster connections between students and professional musicians who have dedicated their careers to service. Such initiatives provide practical insight into the world of professional music, offering students first-hand experiences from seasoned veterans.

Nurturing Future Talents

The Sea Chanters’ visit and the masterclass represent an investment in the professional growth of young vocalists. With his expertise, Buttram coached eager learners, enhancing their vocal skills and understanding of music. By meeting and learning from active service members who are also accomplished musicians, students gain a unique perspective on the discipline and dedication inherent to both music and military service.

A Tour of Musical Service

The national tour of the Sea Chanters is an embodiment of the U.S. Navy's dedication to cultural contributions and educational support. Marking their commitment to community engagement, the chorus’s tour is an outreach activity that reinforces the Navy's role in national heritage and arts education, ensuring that the spirit of service and the love for music are continuously shared across the country.
