Salvation Army's Big Brass Blast Band Returns for a Festive Performance in Downtown Milwaukee

Published December 16, 2023

Downtown Milwaukee welcomes the lively tunes of the Salvation Army's Big Brass Blast Band for their second annual appearance, as volunteer musicians gather at the 3rd Street Market Hall for a grand performance.

Uplifting the Spirit of Giving Through Music

In synchronization with the commencement of the historic Red Kettle Campaign, now over 130 years running, this festive ensemble aims to spread cheer and encourage charitable giving. The campaign, which began this year on November 10, receives a boost from these musical festivities, drawing attention to its long-standing mission to support community welfare.

The ensemble, including brass, tubas, trombones, and tenor horns, promises attendees a unique musical experience. The musicians, who have been familiarizing themselves with the music for weeks despite having only one rehearsal prior to the event, are dedicated to delivering a captivating show. This dedication is propelled by the knowledge that their performance is not just entertainment but part of a greater cause.

More Than Just a Concert

Music Director Daren Spencer has been instrumental in organizing this gathering of brass talent, emphasizing the meaning of the event as more than just a concert; it's an opportunity for community members to enjoy the holiday season while contributing to an initiative that directly benefits those in need in Milwaukee. The money raised from the Red Kettle Campaign helps finance holiday provisions such as toys and meals, along with supporting local food pantries year-round.

With a target of over 4 million dollars, the Red Kettle Campaign is reliant on support from such events to meet its vital goals. The community is invited to join in on Saturday from noon-1 pm at the 3rd Street Market Hall's shuffleboard courts for this complimentary concert. It's a chance for people to take a joyful pause from the holiday rush, participate in the music, which might include sing-alongs or dancing, and reinforce the spirit of community giving.
