Young Guitarist in El Paso Uses Music for Mental Health and Migrant Support

In El Paso, Texas, a 17-year-old Coronado High School student, Julián Kalel Almanzán, is using the power of music to combat his anxiety while also extending its therapeutic benefits to others in need. Recognizing music's potential to heal and soothe the mind, Julián has become a beacon of hope for those seeking solace through melody.

Striking a Chord Against Anxiety

Julián started playing the guitar in fifth grade and discovered that the instrument was a reliable refuge in his battle against anxiety. 'It brings so much peace to me whenever I pick it up and play it,' Julián shared, highlighting the guitar's consistent presence and support in his life.

Playing for a Cause

With a desire to spread the tranquility he finds in music, Julián is organizing a benefit concert to support migrant families enduring a cold winter at the border. The event, which features Julián's performance, aims to raise spirits and provide much-needed donations to refugee migrants. His connection to the cause is personal; as a second-generation Mexican American, he understands the struggles of those who have left their homelands for better opportunities.

'That's going to make me so happy, that's my goal,' Julián said, expressing his ambition to lift the mood of young males particularly, who might be grappling with similar challenges. He plays various genres including country, Spanish songs, folk, and alternative, but country tunes are his most frequent pick.

Julián believes that during the holiday season, no one should be alone and that people should come together in celebration. His benefit concert is a testament to that belief, providing comfort to those in migrant centers away from their families. 'I feel like me bringing this music and bringing these donations will hopefully lift their spirits a little more,' he commented.

The concert aims to be a memorable evening that not only showcases Julián’s musical talent but also raises awareness and assistance for a vulnerable community. It's scheduled at the Holy Family Refugee Center, reinforcing the message that kindness and community support are paramount.
