Classical Fusion: D. J. Sparr Enlivens the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra with Electric Guitar

Published January 25, 2024

Visitors to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra's classical series might not expect the electric guitar to take the stage, yet the 2023-2024 season brings just that. Notable composer and electric guitarist, D. J. Sparr, will collaborate with the BPO in a unique concert titled Shostakovich & Six Strings.

Guest Conductor Robert Moody

The event, led by guest conductor Robert Moody, begins with Mason Bates' Desert Transport, mimicking the auditory experience of a helicopter journey. It's followed by the premiere of Film Noir: Concerto for Electric Guitar and Orchestra, written by Daron Hagen for Sparr. This piece signifies a fusion of traditional orchestral sounds with the contemporary edge of the electric guitar.

D. J. Sparr's Unique Blend

Sparr expressed his enthusiasm for the genre-blending opportunity, "I’m a trained classical composer who also grew up as a rock’n’roll electric guitarist, and I try to mush it all together." This event also promotes works by other living composers, extending the reach of modern classical music.

Concluding the evening is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, remarked by Sparr as a musical encapsulation of Stalin and a perfect end to the concert. Sparr is eager to present the guitar in an orchestral context, an opportunity not often seen in season line-ups.

Engaging Diverse Audiences

The fusion of guitar and orchestra has been well-received by varied audiences in the past, drawing music lovers from different generations and backgrounds.

Educational Outreach

Aside from the performance, Sparr is conducting a masterclass at the Clement House, targeted at high school and college students playing both classical and electric guitar, showcasing his dedication to nurturing young musical talent.

A Call to Music Enthusiasts

Sparr invites both long-time BPO patrons and newcomers intrigued by the blending of guitar and orchestra. He assures a passionate performance aimed at connecting with listeners, including those from the 'guitar world' curious about its integration into classical music.

The exhibition of high-level guitar skill in an orchestral setting is anticipated to be a provocative and exhilarating experience.

The Shostakovich & Six Strings concerts will take place at Kleinhans Music Hall on February 2nd and 3rd, with tickets now available for purchase.
