Debate Over the Integrity and Impact of Zimbabwe Showbiz Awards

Published December 4, 2023

The adage from acclaimed Hollywood actor Denzel Washington, "man gives an award, God gives the reward", underscores the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the legitimacy and significance of award ceremonies, as well as the value of the accolades presented within Zimbabwe's entertainment industry.

Recent Celebrations in Zimbabwe's Arts Scene

The atmosphere within Zimbabwe's arts scene has been particularly vibrant following a series of award shows, highlighted by the recent Zimbabwe Film and Television Awards. Additionally, the Bulawayo Arts Awards celebrated its seventh iteration by gifting a BMW to winner Insimbi Zezhwane at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Grounds in Bulawayo, amplifying discussions on the value these accolades hold for artists.

Artistic Recognition: Motivation or Misplaced Priorities?

According to actor and entrepreneur Mthunzi Nkolomi, while awards can inspire and acknowledge artists, they also give rise to concerns about fairness, especially when certain artistic styles might be disproportionately favored. Nkolomi further mentions the risk of competition eclipsing the true essence of artistic expression. He stresses the importance of having diverse and fair evaluation criteria to properly celebrate and nurture artistic excellence, thereby enriching cultural diversity.

More Than a Moment of Glory?

Nkolomi suggests that recognition should extend beyond ceremonial gestures. Awards should yield economic benefits and opportunities for global exposure to sustain relevance. He reminds us of TLC's startling bankruptcy revelation at the peak of their fame, hinting at the stark contrast between public honor and financial reality. Likewise, UK-based Zimbabwean musician Qounfuzed, felt disillusioned with the awards system and chose to withdraw from future nominations, citing unclear judging criteria.

Calls for Greater Transparency

The credibility of some awards has been questioned, such as by former SkyzMetro FM presenter Jane Hlomani, who acknowledged the talent of some nominees while criticizing the possible rigging of others. For the awards to maintain their intended purpose, there must be a concerted effort to ensure that recognition is inextricably linked with genuine economic outcomes and wider recognition for artists.
