Young Talents Shine at Lucia Celebration Concert

Published December 11, 2023

In a heartfelt homage to the tradition of Saint Lucia, the Lucia Choir from the American Swedish Institute filled Larson Hall with melodic joy. The ensemble, consisting of dedicated young singers, lit up the stage with their performances on a Sunday at the Nelson Cultural Center, delivering their music to two packed audiences.

Inspiring Rehearsals Culminate in Performance

The group of children and teens had honed their skills over a rigorous five-week rehearsal period. Under the direction of Ingrid Aune, with Janis Aune providing versatile musical accompaniment on piano, Nyckelharpa, and harp, the choir succeeded in dazzling attendees with their vocal harmony and celebration of light during the festive season.

Multi-Talented Youths Take the Stage

Not only did they sing, but some members of the choir also showcased their instrumental prowess by joining forces with the ASI’s Lilla Lag fiddle/cello folk music ensemble. They're set to bring this energy once again to a sold-out performance at the historic Turnblad mansion on December 13.

A Glowing Tradition

The Feast of Saint Lucia, which the concert commemorates, has medieval roots and is marked during what used to be the winter solstice. The modern celebration at the American Swedish Institute carefully replaced real candle flames with electric ones for safety, yet maintained the enchanting atmosphere that is central to the holiday experience.

Lucia and her Procession

The concert opened with the crowd-pleasing 'Sankta Lucia' song, performed in procession by two choirs categorized by age. Linnea Källebo, a senior from Wayzata High School, adorned the role of Lucia with grace, leading the procession alongside attendants Petra Ekstrom and Sofie Gumaelius.

Spotlight on Talent

Both choirs had their moments in the spotlight, with Choir II's rendition of 'Wölkommen hem' being particularly moving. Källebo's solo captivated the audience, and the show featured various group performances, exhibiting wonderful harmonies.

Energy and Enthusiasm from Youngsters

The smaller children injected the concert with their lively spirit, enhancing the performance with their innocent charm. Their jubilant parade during 'Tomtarnas julnatt' was a standout moment full of youthful vigor.

A Showcase of Passion and Reverence

While there were some less polished moments, as expected with young performers, the overall sentiment was one of dedication and respect for the cultural tradition, with the choir conveying a profound sense of reverence through their music.
