Young Talents Captivate Audiences in 'School of Rock' Musical

Published January 29, 2024

Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical 'School of Rock' begins with a question that surprises many: 'Do the kids really play their rock instruments live?' Webber's recorded announcement proudly answers, 'Yes, they do!'. This reassurance is necessary as the average age of the child performers is 11.5, and their musical prowess is often met with disbelief.

A Versatile Young Cast

Seventeen young actors make up a rotating cast, each prepared to play one of the twelve available roles based on scheduling and necessity. They were selected through rigorous auditions for their exceptional talents. Among them are guitarists Hanley Webb and Harry Churchill, bassists Samia Rose Afify and Emerald Finbow, keyboardists James Breen and Thomas Thorneycroft, and drummers Dexter Barry and Samuel Bickmore. They share the stage with established child actors from their home countries and newcomers to the theatre scene.

Performers Share Their Journey

In a warm conversation with reporters, drummer Samuel Bickmore and keyboardist James Breen expressed their growth and the supportive response from audiences during the Seoul Arts Center performances. Despite the initial fear of a subdued crowd, the young performers were met with enthusiastic cheers, which boosted their confidence and highlighted the supportive nature of Korean fans towards musical theatre, even when the language on stage isn't their own.

Bickmore and Breen, born a day apart and having discovered their musical passions at age six, have experienced personal and artistic development during their time with 'School of Rock'. The show provides a learning experience as much as it offers entertainment. They discuss making mistakes and growing stronger as a cast by supporting each other through each show's challenges.

Their hope is to not only showcase their talents but also to resonate with the story's deeper message: the powerful bonds formed between adults and children when achieving the seemingly impossible. The narrative also advocates for mutual understanding and listening between generations.

The Road Ahead

Being part of the 'School of Rock' world tour is a significant stride towards the personal dreams of these little big artists. For Bickmore, it is to join a major rock band and tour the world; Breen aspires to act on larger stages and in television and films. Their involvement with the show serves as both a platform for live performance and confidence-building.

The musical, based on the 2003 comedy film with Webber's music, kicked off its world tour in January at the Seoul Arts Center. Following its South Korea engagement, the show will continue to tour Asian countries throughout the year.
