Wolfgang Van Halen Claps Back at David Lee Roth's Negative Remarks

Published March 8, 2024

Wolfgang Van Halen, the lead of Mammoth WVH and son of the late Eddie Van Halen, recently responded to criticisms from former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth. After Roth directed a public tirade at Wolfgang in a YouTube video, the young musician suggested that Roth's insults were due to Eddie Van Halen's absence. Wolfgang implied that he became an alternative target for Roth now that his father, the legendary guitarist, is no longer alive.

Van Halen Drama Continues

In an interview with Atlanta's The Morning X radio show, 32-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen expressed a mix of honor and frustration at being part of the ongoing Van Halen saga, a drama that predates his birth. He noted that Roth chose to go after the 'next best thing' since Eddie could no longer be the focus of such attacks.

Roth's Controversial Comments

David Lee Roth unleashed a pointed rant where he accused Wolfgang, who became Van Halen's bassist in 2006, of overestimating his role in the band. Roth mocked Wolfgang through a spoof interview, suggesting that Wolfgang believed he deserved his place in Van Halen based on talent alone, disregarding his lineage.

Roth also recounted incidents where Wolfgang supposedly removed guests that he, Roth, had invited to concerts, including at a show in Long Island and the band's final show in Los Angeles. According to Roth, one of the guests worked for an accounting firm representing Wolfgang, which led to an ironic twist: the removed guests were supposed to deliver paychecks to the crew.

Wolfgang Remains Skeptical of Roth's Claims

Wolfgang Van Halen dismissed Roth's remarks as exaggerated and questioned the veracity of some of Roth's more outlandish statements, such as claiming to have written the famous guitar solo Eruption. He suggested taking Roth's words with a grain of salt, pointing out Roth's tendency to make grandiose claims.

When asked about participating in a Van Halen reunion or tribute, Wolfgang firmly declined. He explained that he isn't interested in playing Van Halen music without his father.
