2023 K-pop in a Nutshell Nostalgia Peaks as Second-Generation Boy Groups Make Their Return

Published December 26, 2023

The K-pop music landscape is experiencing a sentimental revival as iconic second-generation boy groups make triumphant returns with fresh music releases, reviving cherished memories for long-time fans and adding depth to the industry's offerings. Groups that entered the scene between 2003 and 2011, including the esteemed SHINee, Ukiss, Infinite, Teen Top, and TVXQ, are at the forefront of this nostalgic wave.

SHINee's Glorious Comeback

Marking a significant return from a hiatus spanning over two years, SHINee launched their eighth studio album titled "Hard" in June, coinciding with their remarkable 15th anniversary. The acclaimed quartet, recognized for their electronic pop sounds and trendsetting performances, also held their sixth solo concert in Seoul, attracting approximately 30,000 fans. This event was particularly special as it was their first concert in nearly seven years, a period extended due to mandatory military service commitments and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ukiss Returns with 'Play List'

Ukiss, an influential name in the K-pop industry throughout the 2010s, made a striking comeback after a five-and-a-half-year break. Their 12th EP titled "Play List" features the lead house pop track "The Wonderful Escape", echoing the group's dynamic vigor, much to the delight of their supporters. Ukiss marked their 15th anniversary with their new EP and celebrated the milestone with shows in Tokyo and Osaka.

Teen Top is '4Sho' Back

Teen Top, after nearly three years, made a bold return as a quartet with their fifth single album "4Sho", following the departure of their leader C.A.P. The group, known for their energetic dance tracks since their 2010 debut, also reconnected with their fans face-to-face in Seoul after a four-year gap with a two-day concert event.

Infinite's Self-Produced '13egin'

Infinite also made headlines with their self-produced seventh EP "13egin". This comeback is especially significant as it's their first release after setting up their own agency and marks a collective effort spanning from musical concept to performance aesthetics. Adding to the emotional impact, member Nam Woo-hyun, despite recovering from a rare cancer surgery, chose to participate actively in the preparations, culminating in a two-day concert in Seoul.

The Legendary TVXQ Celebrates 20 Years

Lastly, the legendary group TVXQ released their ninth studio album "20&2" at the year's end, commemorating an impressive 20-year journey in the industry. The duo's continuous impact is seen as they chalk up many 'firsts' in K-pop history and are scheduled to perform a year-ending concert at the Inspire Arena. The group's legacy, built since their debut as a quintet in 2003, endures even after undergoing lineup changes.
