Gossip's Electrifying Show at the BBC 6 Music Festival

Published March 9, 2024

At the recent BBC 6 Music Festival, Gossip, led by the charismatic Beth Ditto, delivered a concert brimming with energy and meaning. The performance at Victoria Warehouse saw Ditto, in purest comfort, taking to the stage in minimal attire. Early into their headline set, she shed her outerwear, confidently sporting just a bra and underwear while assuring the crowd that her choice was for comfort and not for subversion.

A Look Back at Gossip's Journey

Gossip has been a staple in the indie rock scene for 18 years since they debuted with their hit 'Standing In The Way of Control'. A lot has transpired since: album releases, lineup changes, solo ventures, and even a temporary split. Now, after a 12-year break, they're back for their first Manchester gig in years, previewing songs from their upcoming sixth album 'Real Power', much to the delight of fans.

Supporting Acts and the Gossip Performance

The band was preceded by remarkable acts such as Afrodutsche and CMAT, setting a high bar for the evening. Despite occasional detours from Beth's stories and questions about radio appropriateness, the trio, together with touring bassist Ted Kwo, captivated with a mix of old favorites and intriguing new tracks, even if some were cut short due to a lapse in memory.

Unforgettable Vocals and Surprising Collaborations

Beth Ditto's raw and potent vocals haven't lost their edge, shining through both classic Gossip songs and spontaneous covers, like that of Dolly Parton's '9 To 5'. The highlight came when Alison Moyet joined the stage for a striking collaboration on 'Situation' by Yazz—not once, but twice, when emotions got the better of Beth during the first attempt.

A Show with a Message

As the evening progressed, Gossip reminded everyone of the enduring relevance of their music, particularly with their closing anthem 'Standing In The Way of Control', which resonates as strongly now as it did at its inception. The powerful encore was bolstered with activists joining on stage, transforming the concert into a poignant rally for rights and representation across the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

Gossip proved that they still have the 'Real Power' to command a stage and bring significant messages to the forefront, solidifying the evening as a memorable one for Manchester's music history.
