Foghat Reflects on Over Half a Century in Music and Their Latest Creation, 'Sonic Mojo'

Published December 12, 2023

Foghat drummer Roger Earl displayed his playful character by starting a Zoom interview with his face hanging like a bat, an indication of the spirit that has contributed to more than 50 years in the rock world. A London native, Earl's musical roots reach back to his family home, resonating with tunes from blues and rock legends. A pivotal moment occurred at age 12 when he saw Jerry Lee Lewis live, a performance that basically cemented his future in music.

The Formative Years and Foghat's Birth

Earl's path in music truly began when he joined the English band Savoy Brown at 19, recording several albums. In 1970, he took a leap by forming Foghat with some bandmates, channeling their blues and rock passion into a new journey despite initial setbacks like label rejections and being blacklisted by their former manager.

Rising Through the Ranks

The band secured a deal with Bearsville Records, released their self-titled debut in 1972, and created hits like 'Slow Ride.' Over the years, the lineup changed but Earl remained, steering the band into the present.

A New Era With 'Sonic Mojo'

Scott Holt joined the band before the recording of their newest album 'Sonic Mojo,' released in November. With reverence, they embraced their past and celebrated their inspirations. Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown co-wrote tracks shortly before his passing, an homage tightly woven into the record.

A Lasting Legacy

Foghat's essence is captured in 'Sonic Mojo,' bridging the vintage and the contemporary. A testament to their resilience and commitment to the craft, the album honors the music they love and the influences that shaped them. Despite physical challenges during the recording, Earl's dedication shone through as he insists, it's all for the joy of music and the fans that have been along for the decades-long ride.
