Joy and excitement filled the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe as a nostalgic event made its grand return to the Malawian entertainment scene. The MBC Entertainers of the Year program, once a celebrated annual highlight, was revived after an 18-year hiatus, and the comeback was met with a massive gathering of enthusiastic spectators.

Government Dignitaries Show Support

The revival of the beloved program was graced by the presence of Richard Chimwendo Banda, the Minister of Local Government, along with his companion, the Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu. Their attendance signaled strong governmental support for the arts and the creative industry in the country.

A Night of Commendations and Pledges

Speaking at the event, Minister Chimwendo praised the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) for re-launching the award program. He lauded the program as a beacon of unity and praised Pearson Chunga, the originator of the event in 1985. The Minister also stressed the need for financial institutions like banks to support young artists and reiterated the government's pledge to back the arts sector.

MBC Director General Reflects on A Successful Night

MBC Director General, Mr. George Kasakula, reflected on the ceremony's success and revealed the positive feedback received both locally and internationally. Despite the success, Kasakula acknowledged the need for improvements, particularly in terms of rewarding the entertainers more generously, and expressed hope for increased sponsorship in the future.

A New Entertainer of Entertainers Crowned

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of film interpreter Akila as the Entertainer of Entertainers for the year 2023. The accolade represents the pinnacle of recognition in this rejuvenated event that aims to celebrate and motivate Malawi's creative talents.
