Paris Honors David Bowie with His Own Street Name

Published January 8, 2024

In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary British musician David Bowie, Paris has dedicated a street in his honor, celebrating his remarkable contributions to the worlds of music, fashion, and culture. The newly christened rue David-Bowie now stands as a permanent landmark in the French capital's southeast district, unveiled on the day that would have marked Bowie's 77th birthday.

Commemorating a Music Legend

The announcement to name a street after David Bowie was made back in 2020 by Jérôme Coumet, the mayor of Paris' 13th arrondissement. The world had bid farewell to Bowie in 2016 when he passed away after a battle with cancer. The selected street runs amidst two contemporary buildings, one being the home to prominent news outlets such as Le Monde and L’Obs, and leads towards avenue Pierre-Mendes-France. This strategic location is set to link to a planned bridge connecting the avenue and boulevard de l’Hopital, which is situated not far from Austerlitz train station and Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital.

A District Transformed

As part of the inauguration celebrations, attendees enjoyed a specially organized concert and an exhibition. These events signified the transformation of the district, which now hosts commemorative nods to both David Bowie and other celebrated individuals. The district's metamorphosis is an emblem of the urban development now intertwining Bowie's story with the fabric of the city.

Paris is paying homage to Bowie for his 1965 performance in the city, marking his international debut outside of the United Kingdom. The profound impact Bowie had on global music is reflected in unforgettable songs like "Space Oddity" and "Let’s Dance," while his influence within the fashion industry is also celebrated. Paris' decision to name a street in his honor forever embeds his legacy within the urban vista.
