Celebrating Seven Years of Musical Gatherings with Tribe in the Sky

Published February 14, 2024

In the vibrant music scene of Monterey County, there is a special place that has been nurturing local talent for seven years. This place is known for bringing together musicians of all levels, whether they are seasoned performers or newcomers to the area. It's an inclusive spot for those who wish to meet like-minded individuals, showcase their music, or simply participate in a jam session. This hub of creativity is none other than the Tribe in the Sky's weekly gathering.

A Home for Local Musicians

Every Tuesday, a unique assembly of music enthusiasts, known as Tribe in the Sky, comes together to share their passion. From its modest beginnings at Hotel 1110, this gathering has surmounted various challenges and relocations, continuing to thrive and serve as a weekly fixture for the community. Tribe in the Sky was conceived thanks to Jacqueline Kabat's pioneering efforts, supported by many who dedicated their time and energy to foster a communal atmosphere grounded in the love of music.

New Horizons at Bulldog Sports Bar

The event's current home is the Bulldog Sports Bar in New Monterey. The venue has become a melting pot not only for musicians but also for comedians and storytellers to exhibit their craft. It's an environment ripe for collaboration, spearheaded by Kabat and local scene pioneer Brad Mallory. And as this haven for the arts resumes its post-pandemic operations, it continues to embody the communal spirit that made it a cherished locale.

Performers of various stripes – from vocalists like Barbara Ann Wagner to saxophonist Arno Featherstone – grace the stage regularly, fostering a mentoring environment that transcends generations. Beyond the performances, the venue itself is a hub where people gather to enjoy a good meal, admire the photography of regular Bill Brown, and perhaps even obtain that perfect portrait they've long desired. Mallory and Kabat ensure a welcoming open mic experience for all attendees.

Anniversary Celebrations and Beyond

The upcoming Tuesday marks a significant milestone as Tribe in the Sky celebrates its seventh year of collaboration and creativity. This anniversary is an open invitation for both entertainers and spectators to join in the festivities.

While Tribe in the Sky remains a cornerstone of the local music scene, there are also other events and venues in Monterey that continue to enchant audiences. The Hyatt Regency Monterey and the Monterey Marriott are just some of the sites where live music is making a comeback, featuring acts like the Bruce and Pam Forman Jazz Duo and the Latin Jazz Collective. The punk legacy of The Ramones is even being upheld by Marky Ramone at the Golden State Theatre.

Finally, the Big Sur crowd is not left out, with performances like Marty O'Reilly's at Fernwood Resort arranged by (((folkYEAH!))). The variety and richness of Monterey County's auditory experiences show no signs of waning, offering platforms for artists to flourish and audiences to rejoice in the harmony of community and music.
