Nitin Sawhney Cancels Gigs Due to Emergency Surgery After Heart Attack

Nitin Sawhney, an acclaimed musician from the nineties, has had to call off several performances due to a dire health emergency. The 59-year-old artist experienced a frightening incident that led him to undergo emergency heart surgery.

Health Scare Leads to Canceled Performances

Sawhney took to social media to disclose his recent heart attack and the consequent medical procedures he endured. Fans were shocked as the musician described losing consciousness and awakening amidst a 'pool of blood' caused by falling onto a glass table during the attack, which necessitated further plastic surgery to remove shards of glass from his face.

After the initial operation where the NHS inserted a stent in one of his heart’s arteries, Sawhney remains in the hospital for another upcoming surgery. He expressed gratitude towards the NHS for their 'fantastic' service during both his prior operations.

Genetic Factors and A Family History of Heart Disease

Despite leading a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a nutritious diet, Sawhney pointed to a genetic predisposition to heart disease, shedding light on his family's extensive history with the condition.

The artist stated his upcoming performance in Australia and several other gigs have been pushed to later dates as he recovers and prepares for the third surgery procedure.

Persistent Work Ethic and Future Plans

Even while dealing with his health issues, Sawhney mentioned his role in producing tracks for the UK's number one album by Rod Stewart and Jools Holland. He hopes to be back for his UK Identity Tour in April, with performances lined up in cities like Glasgow and London, although his show with The Hallé has been deferred.

Sawhney urges particularly those in vulnerable groups such as British Asians, who are witnessing a surge in heart disease fatalities, to get their heart health checked. He emphasizes the importance of awareness given the unpredictable nature of such medical crises.

Sawhney's career boasts a plethora of international awards, including a CBE and an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award. His collaborations span across an elite group of artists including Paul McCartney and Ellie Goulding. His acceptance of a CBE in 2019 was a notable moment as he previously declined an OBE, claiming it held colonial connotations. The CBE was accepted in tribute to his parents' experiences as immigrants.
