Manila Symphony Orchestra Unveils Centennial Countdown with National Concerts and Tours

Published March 5, 2024

As the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) approaches its 100-year milestone, a captivating plan to celebrate and share their music legacy has been unveiled. Under the direction of Maestro Marlon Chen, the orchestra is setting the stage for a historic campaign. This initiative, titled 'Road to 100,' is designed to not only mark the orchestra's centennial celebration but also to strengthen the bond between orchestral music and the Philippines' diverse generations.

'Road to 100': A Musical Journey Across the Philippines

Originating in 1926, the MSO has been a beacon of musical artistry in Asia. With their 100th anniversary on the horizon in 2026, they are launching a series of gala concerts and far-reaching tours. 'Road to 100' is more than a mere commemoration; it's a forward-looking mission to embed classical music deep within the Filipino culture - a sound that resonates with people of all ages, from urban dwellers to provincial communities.

Concerts and Tours: Bridging Traditions with Modernity

Maestro Marlon Chen emphasizes the importance of this campaign as a bridge connecting tradition with contemporary life. By June, the 'Road to 100' will officially take flight with special tribute performances to Giacomo Puccini. Further concerts will cover illustrious pieces from Sibelius, Dvorak, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky, to be held throughout the year in various prestigious venues.

Simultaneously, the MSO will embark on a national tour, gracing stages across key cities, such as Las PiƱas, Batangas, Cebu, and Bacolod, with more locations expected to join the lineup. This tour is seen as an essential step to ensure that the outreach and impact of classical music extend well beyond the capital.

Funding the Future of Orchestral Music

In tandem with these performances, the MSO aims to bolster support for its sister institutions, which include the MSO Foundation, the MSO Music Academy, and the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra. This network seeks to nurture the next generation of music talent and enthusiasts, ensuring the survival and thriving of orchestral music in the region.

Leading up to the grand centennial celebration in 2026, the MSO will also launch a comprehensive commemorative book, encapsulating a century of musical excellence. This publication will offer insights from musicians and guest conductors who have been part of the MSO's storied history.

As anticipation builds, the public is invited to support the 'Road to 100' campaign by attending the concerts. Tickets are now available, and updates can be found on MSO's social media pages.
