Fantasia Barrino and 'The Color Purple' Steal the Spotlight

The awards ceremony, which was hosted by Queen Latifah and aired live on BET, also acknowledged the movie 'The Color Purple' as the Best Motion Picture. The musical film featured talents like Fantasia Barrino, who took home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, citing her fear of playing the character Celie but also her pride in the impact it had on viewers and women who related to her role.

Further, the night celebrated the induction of New Edition into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, honoring the group's enduring legacy and influence in music. The group, comprising figures like Bobby Brown and Johnny Gill, was recognized for their unity and resilience throughout the years.

Other notable winners included Damson Idris for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series for his role in 'Snowfall,' while co-stars Taraji P. Henson and Colman Domingo earned best supporting roles for their work in 'The Color Purple,' with Domingo also securing Best Actor in a motion picture for his portrayal in 'Rustin.'
