Ukiah Jazz Fest: A Musical Dream Expanded

Published February 29, 2024

Last year, Essence Roberson-McCormick and her husband Ken brought their vision to life by introducing T-Up Mini Golf, a unique entertainment venture which included a mini golf course and a lounge, among other attractions. This year, they are taking it a step further by sharing their dream with the larger community.

Jazz Legends and Local Stars Grace Ukiah

The couple's business is celebrating its second anniversary with a big musical bash—the Ukiah Jazz Fest, set for Saturday, March 2. The event boasts an impressive lineup, featuring the renowned saxophonist Bill Saxton, as well as Ukiah's own musical icon Paula Samonte. These headlining artists will be joined by over a dozen other talents, including Grammy winner Paul McCandless, making this occasion possibly the first official jazz festival of its kind in inland Ukiah.

Bill Saxton's Return to Ukiah

After a stirring performance last year, Bill Saxton is returning to T-Up's Jazz Fest, ready to enchant audiences once again. With a storied career that includes sharing stages and studios with jazz greats and receiving honors like the Jazz Legend award at New York's Lincoln Center, Saxton's presence is highly anticipated.

Paula Samonte and Paul McCandless: Local and Global Talent

Paula Samonte is a beloved figure in Mendocino County's music scene. With a rich history in performance and education, she adds local flavor to the festival. Paul McCandless, the Grammy-winning reed player, brings a global perspective, having played with some of the most respected musicians in a variety of genres.

Supporting the Community: A Benefit Jazz Fest in Maui

This year's festival holds special meaning for the couple, as it serves as the launch for a new benefit event—the Jazz Fest in Maui. Ken, who has personal experience with disaster after his parents lost their home in the Paradise Fire, is motivated to use this opportunity to help build replacement housing for victims in Maui.

With the festival gates opening at 12:30 pm and music spanning from 1 pm to 8 pm, attendees can enjoy great food, games, and of course, the vibrant jazz performances. Ukiah Jazz Fest not only celebrates music but the spirit of community and resilience.
