Homegrown Talent Shines at Meredith Music Festival Despite Mud and Rain

Published December 10, 2023

As the famous Meredith Music Festival celebrated its 31st year, it wasn't just the headliners like Kraftwerk and Caroline Polachek who captured the crowd's attention. Local Australian bands made a significant impact, demonstrating the festival's well-known spirit for diverse and vibrant performances.

The Challenge of Weather

While the music and atmosphere remained the festival's core focus, the extreme weather had its role in shaping the experience this year. With gusty hot winds giving way to rain, the conditions turned the venue into a challenging muddy setting. However, the weather did little to dampen the spirits of the attendees or the enthusiasm of the performing acts.

International Charm and Local Flair

The event launched with the hot winds as UK's Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs brought fiery metal to a dusty stage. By evening, Caroline Polachek offered a transfixing performance, her voice weaving through the air with a mix of dance-pop and techno-opera, her presence golden and commanding.

Polachek wasn't the only international act to grace the festival. Souls of Mischief from California revisited classic hip-hop beats while Japanese DJ Kuniyuki treated festival-goers to live crowd-sample-infused dance beats. And then there was Kraftwerk, delivering their iconic electronic beats paired with mesmerizing visuals.

Stellar Acts from the Locals

The real surprise, however, came from the local scene. Melbourne band Floodlights channeled classic Ozrock vibes while infusing their music with fresh energy, becoming one of the standout acts. Cable Ties from Coburg delivered an explosive set, full of raw energy and spontaneous moments, setting the stage for Kraftwerk with a tough act to follow.

As the festival drew to a close, the hours post-Kraftwerk were filled with music from Sneaky Sound System among others, marking the transition from live music to dance tunes that carried on until dawn.

Despite the mud-soaked challenges, the festival succeeded in creating unforgettable memories for the attendees, celebrating a mix of rock, dance, hip-hop, and more, all cementing the event's reputation as a space for good times and the celebration of music.
