Sólveig Erla: A Flourishing Flautist from Iceland's Promising Band Skandal

The music scene has welcomed the talents of many musicians over the years, and now it shines the spotlight on a rising flautist, Sólveig Erla Baldvinsdóttir, a native of Tjörn in Skagabyggð. Born in 2006, Sólveig Erla is the third northwest Icelander to join the promising all-female band Skandal. Along with her fellow members, she attends Menntaskólinn á Akureyri, sharing her journey through both education and music.

Sólveig Erla grew up in an environment rich with diverse music. Her childhood soundtrack ranged from classic Icelandic bands such as Ljótu hálfvitarnir to soothing melodies of Maria Callas and Norah Jones, which her mother played to lull her to sleep. When asked about her own music interests, Sólveig reveals a deep appreciation for the sounds of the 70s, as well as rock from the 80s and 90s, especially enjoying bands like Pink Floyd and Whitesnake.

Sólveig Erla has a diverse palette when it comes to her musical tastes. She is currently drawn to Money for Nothing by Dire Straits but also has an affinity for classics like November Rain by Guns N' Roses. If given the chance to pick a singing partner, she humorously envisions a duet with Bonnie Tyler on Total Eclipse of the Heart. While Sólveig herself may not sing, she clearly enjoys envisioning high-energy collaborations.
