Legendary Korean Hip-Hop Band Uptown Makes a Comeback with 'Back II Analogue'

Published November 30, 2023

After suspending their activities for 13 years, the renowned Korean hip-hop ensemble Uptown has made a triumphant return to the music scene. The group's latest venture, an album titled 'Back II Analogue', marks a new era for the veteran artists who had a significant impact on the genre in the 90s.

Uptown's Formation and Initial Success

Uptown took shape in 1997, with original lineup comprising Chris Jung, Carlos Galvan, Steve Kim, and celebrated female MC Tasha Reid, also known as Yoon Mi-rae. They quickly surged in popularity through their 1997 hits 'Back to Me' and 'You Inside Me'. The group's journey, however, was not without its hurdles. They encountered various challenges including lineup alterations and a disbandment in 2000 brought on by drug allegations directed at several members. Yoon Mi-rae left to focus on a solo career, and the band attempted to reestablish themselves in 2006 with a fresh face, Jessica Ho, who is now popularly known as Jessi.

A New Chapter for Uptown

Re-emerging from their extended break, Uptown has unveiled a new member composition, featuring original member Chris Jung. They have been joined by singer Ru.B and rapper Babylon. Their recent release has been met with anticipation and curiosity from both long-time fans and newcomers to their music. The album's concept stays true to the essence of hip-hop, employing minimal digital enhancements and focusing on the raw, authentic sound that characterized their early work.

Chris Jung, now also Uptown's main producer, shared his thoughts on their comeback, feeling both anxious and proud to be in the limelight again. The new recruits, Ru.B and Babylon, have echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the significant legacy they are now part of. Ru.B, a former member of the girl group Spica, is fully committed to honoring the group's esteemed history, while Babylon, an R&B singer-songwriter, aims to make his mark and pay homage to the pioneers of Korean music.

Unfazed by the prospects of upholding the tradition of Black music from Korea's perspective, the members of Uptown are confident in their artistic expression. The band's comeback is not just about reliving past glories but rather honoring the fundamental R&B, hip-hop, and soul that define them. With this latest album, Uptown is set to reconnect with older fans and introduce their distinctive sound to a whole new audience in an ever-evolving music industry.
