SZA Stands Up for Creed and Nickelback Amidst Criticism

Published December 1, 2023

Grammy-nominated singer SZA has recently voiced her support for rock bands Creed and Nickelback. During an interview celebrating her Variety's 'Hitmaker of the Year' title, SZA didn't hesitate to share her eclectic music taste, including her peculiar affection for these often-criticized bands.

SZA's Unexpected Rock Favorites

While discussing her musical preferences, SZA surprised the interviewer by mentioning her recent playlist that featured Creed, Nickelback, and the hit song 'Drops of Jupiter' by Train. This revelation prompted the interviewer to laugh and question the popularity of these bands among different audiences. SZA responded enthusiastically, defending them with a rhetorical question, 'Do white people hate Creed and Nickelback? Why? Black people love them! They rock!'

Her praise didn't end there. She went on to laud 'Higher' by Creed, highlighting the track's inspirational and uplifting qualities. SZA described the song as being almost like a gospel, with vocals that she found incredibly powerful and lyrics that she felt were fun and romantic.

More Than Just Rock for SZA

Throughout the interview, it became clear that her taste in music wasn't limited to rock. She credited her father's passion for jazz as a significant influence and also listed various other artists, including Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, and Bjork, as frequent players in her song rotations.

SZA has enjoyed a solid start to 2023 after the successful surprise drop of her album 'SOS' in late 2022. Her work was acknowledged with nominations for 'Album of the Year' and 'Best Progressive R&B Album' at the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards. Additionally, she hinted at an extended version of 'SOS' named 'Lana', to be released in the fall, though the official date remains unconfirmed.
