Ryan Gosling Playfully Jabs at Oscars in ‘Barbie’ Promo Skit

Published February 14, 2024

Ryan Gosling, known for his role in La La Land, has captured the audience's attention once again, but this time through a comical promotional video for the Oscars. In the skit, Gosling humorously points out the Academy's oversight in not nominating Greta Gerwig, the director of last year's hit film, 'Barbie'.

A Parody with a Message

In this playful jab, a video lasting around five minutes features Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the Oscars, embarking on a journey to the prestigious Dolby Theater while navigating through Barbie's colorful universe. During this amusing quest, he is accompanied by a cast including Kate MacKinnon as 'Weird Barbie' and Helen Mirren lending her voice for the narration.

The parody reaches a comedic peak when Gosling's character, Ken, joins the scene. Clad in a 'Kenough' hoodie, sporting sunglasses, and holding an In-N-Out burger, he appears relaxed and nonchalant about the awards ceremony. His belief that Gerwig is set to win an award for directing is quickly shattered, leading to an exaggerated, collective outburst among the characters upon learning of the snub.

Gosling and Ferrera Speak Out

Ryan Gosling and Academy Award nominee America Ferrera had previously expressed their disbelief at the exclusion of Greta Gerwig and the film's lead, Margot Robbie, from the nominations list. Gosling notes the irony of his prestigious nomination for his role as a plastic toy, while emphasizing the integral contributions of Gerwig and Robbie to the film's monumental success.

The satirical video ends with an announcement of the upcoming Academy Awards hosted by Kimmel, which will be broadcast on ABC on March 10.
