Celebration Through Song: African American Composer Initiative's Fundraising Concert

Published January 30, 2024

Days before Black History Month commences, the African American Composer Initiative (AACI) presented its 13th annual concert in support of Eastside College Preparatory School, showcasing a wealth of musical talent and compositions by African American artists both historic and contemporary.

Bridging Past and Present With Music

This noteworthy event featured a non-profit collective of Bay Area musicians, which included guest performers hailing from New York. They joined forces to pay tribute to the rich tapestry of African American music across various eras, focusing on genres ranging from classical to jazz.

According to Jansen Verplank, a development coordinator and music teacher at Eastside Prep, the AACI concert not only celebrates the works of African American composers but also brings awareness to their significant yet often overlooked contributions to the musical landscape.

Educational Impact and Cultural Representation

In the lead-up to the concert, the AACI engaged with students from the school, providing them with a unique educational experience and a deeper understanding of the music they were about to witness. Verplank emphasized the importance of representing and celebrating the cultures and family backgrounds of all students within the arts.

Eastside College Preparatory School, which exclusively caters to minority populations and relies entirely on donations, sees music education as a pivotal tool for inspiring young, aspiring artists like junior Ula Pineda, who spoke about the program's role in cultural connection.

Support Beyond the Stage

Fervent support for young musicians was a sentiment echoed by AACI musician John Worley, who expressed his dedication not just to playing music, but to playing it for a cause that adds to the world. In line with this, he has personally offered financial support for minority students in need.

Commitment to inclusivity and facilitating the growth of budding musicians remains a central theme for both the school and the AACI, as they aim to provide diverse musical presentations that underscore the beauty of our differences.

A Legacy of African American Music in the Bay Area

The area's history, significantly influenced by its African American population surge over time, has seen the emergence of a unique musical legacy. Making a substantial effort towards supporting this, organizations like AACI look forward with optimism, as noted by Ula Pineda, suggesting that as society evolves, so too will the music that narrates our shared experiences.
