Brixton Academy Set to Reopen with Tribute Concerts After 2022 Tragedy

Published March 4, 2024

The O2 Academy Brixton in London is scheduled to welcome back music fans with a series of tribute acts this April. The iconic venue has been closed since a tragic incident in December 2022, when a crowd crush resulted in the deaths of 23-year-old security guard Gaby Hutchinson and 33-year-old Rebecca Ikumelo. The reopening comes after extensive safety upgrades and compliance with new, strict conditions set by local authorities.

Historic Venue Gears Up for Reopening

Following a 16-month pause due to the devastating events, the Brixton Academy has announced it will reopen with an initial lineup featuring Nirvana and Oasis tribute bands. The Academy has been undergoing maintenance and improvements, which have cost over £1.2 million in 2023. This substantial effort was made to enhance safety and ensure the venue meets the 77 conditions required for its licence to be reinstated. A mix of test events and performances by tribute bands is planned to mark its return.

First Tribute Acts to Take the Stage

The first live shows since the closure are set for 19 April with tribute acts to Nirvana and The Smiths, followed by performances by Definitely Mightbe (Oasis tribute) and UK Food Fighters (Foo Fighters tribute) on the 26th. These events will reintroduce live music to the venue, which has committed to ensuring heightened security and crowd management to prevent future tragedies.

A Commitment to Safety and Remembrance

The Academy Music Group, which operates Brixton Academy, has expressed its continued devastation over the 2022 event and extended sympathies to the families affected. The group has reassured the public and the authorities of their dedication to learning from the past and implementing all necessary measures to avoid such incidents in the future. With stronger doors, an improved queuing system, and enhanced ticketing, the venue is set to offer a safer experience for concert-goers while honoring the memory of those lost.
