Pat Thomas' Journey from Band Member to Music Historian and Record Producer

Published January 30, 2024

At the heart of Pat Thomas' multifaceted career is an undying passion for music and creativity. His journey started in Rochester, New York, where he and his high school friends formed the band Absolute Grey. After parting ways with the band, Thomas headed west to the Bay Area, where in 1988 he established Heyday Records, marking the beginning of a series of original albums that showcased his artistic vision.

Fostering Musical Reissues and New Paths

Pat Thomas didn't stop with his own music; he also took interest in the past, curating reissues of iconic albums from the '60s through '80s. Simultaneously, he penned books and brought to life Mushroom, a band renowned for its spontaneous, psychedelic sound that seamlessly blends rock, blues, jazz, and more. Even in challenging times, like the pandemic, Mushroom's creativity didn't wane, resulting in the album Messages from the Spliff Bunker, a product of socially-distanced sessions that celebrated improvisation and the unexpected beauty of first takes.

A Legacy of Collaborations and Cultural Contributions

Thomas' work extends beyond performance and production. His connection with music history is personal and scholarly, leading to his time at Evergreen College and a bachelor's degree grounded in his own works about music's role in culture and politics. His expertise in musical retrospectives blossomed, overseeing hundreds of reissues and currently collaborating with Fire Records in London. His dedication to preserving and celebrating legacy found another outlet with the re-release of Allen Ginsberg's recordings under his revived label, Heyday Again.

Thomas' career has woven through various geographical and cultural landscapes, from the indie success of Heyday Records to his time promoting music abroad in Germany. His ability to synergize with figures like Allen Ginsberg showcases his knack for 'little company' collaborations that resonate deeply with the ethos of creative purity, something he sees mirrored in Ginsberg's lifelong partnership with City Lights.
