Brunswick Celebrates St. Patrick's Day with Packed Pubs and Festive Spirits

Published March 17, 2024

Brunswick's love for St. Patrick's Day was in full display as the weekend concluded with local pubs brimming with patrons adorned in green attire and enjoying their fill of Guinness. The atmosphere buzzed with the sound of live music, the aroma of traditional Irish dishes, and the warmth of good company.

Byrnes Irish Pub: A Hub of Festivities

At Byrnes Irish Pub on Station Avenue, a queue formed even before the doors swung open. Inside, the pub was packed to the rafters, with some patrons enduring hours-long waits for a table. Notwithstanding the crowd, folks relished the Irish-themed fare such as shepherd's pie and corned beef amidst the serenades of Barry Arvin Young, a local musician. Patrick Byrnes, the pub's manager, considers the conviviality and new friendships formed the best elements of the holiday.

O'Donoghue's Pub Welcomes Spring

O'Donoghue's Pub on Pleasant Street also saw an influx of merry-makers, marking a positive contrast to the previous year when it was shut on March 17 due to flooding. Patrons could be seen dancing to the strains of the live band or enjoying the outdoor deck when the sun decided to show. Owner Patrick O'Donoghue often thinks of St. Patrick's Day as the 'unofficial start of spring,' a time when people gather and socialize, leaving hibernation behind. Foremost for O'Donoghue is the allure of music and the bonds it creates among his guests.

Kristian Moravec captured images from both pubs, illustrating the high spirits and busy scenes that typified the day.
