One Love 2024: Rain Can't Dampen High Spirits at Reggae Fest

Published January 28, 2024

Despite the damp conditions, the One Love 2024 reggae festival saw 15,000 enthusiasts gather at Tauranga Domain, New Zealand, during the Auckland Anniversary weekend, undeterred by the weather and ready to groove to their favorite rhythms.

Anticipation was high with festivalgoers queuing up on Cameron Rd, two hours before the event's gates even opened. But the energy remained unshaken as heavy rainfall later did little to dissuade attendees from relishing in the festival's offerings of food, music, and vibrant atmosphere.

The two-day event boasted a lineup of 50 artists, which included renowned names like Sean Paul, UB40, and Sons of Zion, alongside plenty of local talent such as Jackson Owens, Nesian Mystik, and Tauranga's Corella.

One Love 2024 marked a significant return after the festival had to be canceled in 2022 due to pandemic restrictions and in 2023 because of extreme weather conditions. This year's installment drew crowds from all over, from different corners of New Zealand to as far as Japan and Finland.

Among the early birds at the gate was Richard Poti and his family from Hastings, emphasizing the event's positive vibes and their excitement to secure a prime spot in front of the stage.

Attendees from Auckland to Coromandel shared their experiences, noting the packed crowds and the perfect festival atmosphere. For many first-timers, the One Love festival was an experience they had long been encouraged to attend by friends and family.

Despite the Sunday rain, the crowd remained enthusiastic, donning colorful ponchos and continuing their dance in front of the stage, starting with a performance by local band Corella.

One Love Festival promoter Glenn Meikle expressed excitement for the festival's revival, considering it a key part of New Zealand's summer festivities and glad to see its return as the ultimate reggae celebration.
