The National Philharmonic Presents Handel’s ‘Messiah’ at Celebrated Venues

Published December 14, 2023

The historic and renowned choral work 'Messiah' by George Frideric Handel, a mainstay in holiday music traditions, is being performed by the National Philharmonic. This year's presentations are set to take place at the Strathmore venue in North Bethesda, Maryland, followed by an appearance at the Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia, bringing a centuries-old musical treasure to contemporary audiences.

Timeless Musical Tradition

'Messiah,' since its inception in 1742, has been performed without interruption, making it a work of exceptional longevity in the realms of musical performance. According to Music Director Piotr Gajewski, this piece has seen annual revivals, spreading from England to the United States and becoming ingrained in the cultural fabric of societies. This year's performances by the National Philharmonic at Strathmore and Capital One Hall continue this unwavering tradition.

Distinguished Ensemble and Soloists

The National Philharmonic will be led by Piotr Gajewski, with the support of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and a talented group of African American soloists, including soprano Aundi Marie Moore, mezzo soprano Lucia Bradford, tenor Norman Shankle, and baritone Jorell Williams. This casting choice is a powerful statement that acknowledges historical perspectives while promoting the talents of African American artists.

A Commitment to Community

In a beautiful blend of music and social consciousness, a portion of the ticket sales from these performances will be donated to the Scotland African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church, a historic congregation in need of support as they rebuild from flood damage. Enhancing the community engagement, the church's gospel choir will perform in the concert venue lobbies, offering a prelude of spirited gospel music to concertgoers.

Recognizable Melodies and Impressive Venues

Audiences can anticipate a collection of familiar and beloved melodies that narrate the Christmas story, resonating with listeners through cultural recognition. From the ubiquitous 'Hallelujah' chorus to other staple carols, these performances are meant to instill the holiday spirit. The concert experience is complemented by the acclaimed acoustics and holiday decorations of the prestigious Strathmore and the state-of-the-art facilities of the newly constructed Capital One Hall.
