Published February 25, 2024

DeKALB – An ensemble of 12 middle and high school bands from the Northern Illinois region showcased their musical talent this past Friday. The event was part of the 13th annual Concert Band Festival organized by Northern Illinois University (NIU), which took place at the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall within the university's Music Building.

A Display of Diverse Repertoires

Each band had the chance to perform their chosen musical pieces on stage. Among the performers, the UIC College Prep Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Justin Boyd, stood out with their performance just before the final act. Their chosen repertoire included pieces like “Fanfare and Fireworks” by Brain Balmages, “Andalucía” by Victor López, “Chorale Elaga’nt” by Elena Lucas, and “Escape from Thunder Mountain” by Scott Watson, showcasing a diverse range of styles and composers.

Educational Opportunities and Masterful Performances

Alongside their performance, each participating school had the privilege of attending a 20-minute clinic with expert clinicians, gaining valuable feedback and insights. The festival also featured a 30-minute performance by the NIU Wind Ensemble, adding to an enriching experience for both performers and audience members. During Grayslake Central High School Wind Ensemble's opening performance directed by Kamal Talukder, livestream listeners praised the horn section and the ensemble's tone while playing “The Falls'' by Rossano Galante.

The festival, a partnership between NIU and Phantom Regiment, serves as a platform for student musicians to not only perform but also to learn and grow from experienced professionals, making it a celebrated event in the academic and musical calendar.
