The Buzzcocks Ignite San Francisco with Electrifying Performance

Published March 15, 2024

The Buzzcocks made a triumphant return to the Bay Area with a stirring performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on the evening of March 14. In their first local appearance since the passing of their iconic lead singer, Pete Shelley, in December 2018, the band demonstrated their enduring spirit and influence within the pop-punk genre.

The late Pete Shelley was fondly remembered by fans who cherished his distinctive voice. Nevertheless, skeptics were proven wrong as the Buzzcocks put forth a vibrant show, proving they remain a formidable act even after Shelley's departure. The band's resilience was bolstered by the success of their latest album without Shelley, 'Sonics in the Soul'.

Launching their set at 10:15 p.m. with the classic punk anthem 'What Do I Get?', guitarist Steve Diggle, along with drummer Danny Farrant, bassist Chris Remington, and guitarist/backing vocalist Mani Perazzoli, brought incredible energy to the stage. The evening featured a melding of iconic tracks and songs from their new album, highlighting the Buzzcocks' remarkable ability to blend their historic sound with fresh material.

Steve Diggle, now leading vocals, maintained a powerful presence throughout the evening. Renowned for incorporating British guitar virtuosity into their music, Diggle's performance signaled that the Buzzcocks continue to merit audiences' attention so long as he wields his guitar. Finishing the main performance in an hour, they concluded with 'Manchester Rain' from their recent release before embarking on an extensive encore.

The encore lasted an impressive 40 minutes, a substantial duration in the punk rock realm, during which the band played some of their most celebrated hits, including 'Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't’ve)', leaving no doubt about the Buzzcocks' place in pop-punk history.
