Ana Tijoux Makes a Triumphant Return with 'Vida'

Published March 15, 2024

The influential Chilean MC and singer Ana Tijoux is back in the spotlight after almost ten years with her fifth album titled Vida. Released in January, the album arrives at a pivotal time, with Tijoux's signature protest anthems resonating strongly in our current era. Known for her tenacity and prowess as a rapper and singer, Tijoux has honed her skills over two decades, delivering her powerful messages through music.

Roots to Rebellion

Ana Tijoux was born in France to Chilean parents who left Chile after the 1973 military coup. Her return to Chile in 1993, during the country's transition to a civil government, marked the beginning of her musical journey. Gaining fame in the late 90s with the rap group Makiza, she voiced resistance against Chile’s past military rule.

Path of a Solo Artist

Following Makiza's disbandment in 2006, Tijoux pursued a solo career. Her albums reflect her passion for feminism and anti-capitalism, stemming from her family's history and their experience in exile. She has attracted global attention, earning nominations for both Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, and even winning a Latin Grammy for her 2014 hit 'Universos Paralelos'.

The Fabric of 'Vida'

'Vida', a 15-track venture, showcases a blend of jazz fusion, R&B, Latin percussion, and pointed lyrics—a combination that has become Tijoux's trademark. Produced by Andres Celis, who also produced her acclaimed 2014 album 'Vengo', the new album illustrates Tijoux's artistic growth. It features collaborations with artists like Talib Kweli and De La Soul's Plug 1, who contribute their own lyrical flair to the mix.

Intimate Life Stories

Tijoux’s Vida diverges from her past works by sharing more personal narratives. It touches on her experiences of motherhood and the loss of her sister to cancer, as showcased in heartfelt tracks like 'Tania'. Other songs, such as the bold 'Dime Qué' and introspective 'Busco Mi Nombre', combine intense rap with rich instrumental arrangements, inviting listeners to join the quest for justice and freedom.
