Published February 5, 2024

The prestige of the Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music was on full display as 16 alumni and faculty members were honored with nominations at the 66th Grammy Awards. These accomplished individuals were recognized across several categories including Best Choral Performance, Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance, and Best Classical Compendium, showcasing the broad talents and musical versatility of the Bienen community.

Highlighting the Nominees

Among the notable candidates was the professional chamber choir, 'The Crossing', spearheaded by Bienen's former Professor Donald Nally. 'The Crossing', acclaimed for its innovative take on contemporary music, garnered attention with their latest work, 'Carols after a Plague', securing yet another Best Choral Performance nomination.

Assistant conductor and Bienen alumnus, Kevin Vondrak, reflected on the group's unique approach to music and engagement with current societal themes. Through art, they strive to understand and articulate the complexities of today's world, a mission that also resonates with singer Lauren Kelly, who emphasized the intrinsic value of art over the pursuit of accolades.

Moreover, 'Third Coast Percussion', an ensemble formed by Bienen graduates, made a strong showing with their Grammy-nominated album 'Between Breaths', exploring themes of balance and reflection shaped by the pandemic's influence.

Bienen's Lasting Impact

Bienen's significant contribution to the world of music is evident not only in these accolades but also through the powerful narratives and artistic endeavors its community continues to produce. Time and again, the Bienen School's emphasis on collaboration and contemporary music equips its students to become trailblazers in the field, translating their education into tangible and celebrated success in the world of classical music.
