Kinsey Brothers Honored: A Legacy of Music and Family

Published March 3, 2024

As the community bid farewell and paid tribute to Ralph and Donald Kinsey, esteemed musicians from Gary, Florence Kinsey felt compelled to share insights about the deep love and lighthearted struggles inherent in close-knit family relationships. Florence, Ralph's former spouse and lifelong close companion, recollected their times perusing old family albums. She humorously mentioned Ralph's observation about Donald's ever-present smile in the photos, always ensuring his inclusion in every moment shared. With Donald's passing following Ralph's by just 21 days, these reflections drew a bittersweet smile from her.

Fond Memories at a Solemn Gathering

The Love Feast Church was filled with those who cherished the Kinsey brothers, including their fellow churchgoers, friends, and fans of The Kinsey Report, the blues band they famously performed in. The celebration of life service was a testament to the brothers' impact and the love they fostered throughout their community. Ralph, who recently passed away at 71 after battling cancer, and Donald, who succumbed at age 70 to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, left behind a rich musical heritage and profound personal influence.

Family Ties and Musical Roots

Their bond as siblings was undeniable and fortified by a shared commitment to music and family values. This was instilled by their father, Lester “Big Daddy” Kinsey, who formed the band with his sons. Friends and family recalled how history and musical education were emphasized in their upbringing—a sentiment passionately echoed by Florence Kinsey. They learned songs by practice in the middle of the night, their father's innovative method of teaching them in darkness.

Leaving a Mark on Music and Family

Donald's unique musical journey even included playing with Bob Marley's band. His reinterpretation of a classic Chuck Berry tune impressed friends and colleagues alike and affirmed his exceptional talents. Meanwhile, Ralph was a committed family man, eschewing Saturday morning cartoons for book reports, fostering a love of learning in his children.

Carrying on the Legacy

Andy Orgodzinski, who played with The Kinsey Report until 2012, expressed how both brothers influenced his musicianship, summarizing the profound lessons they imparted. The Kinseys are survived by family members who continue to honor their memory and the lessons they shared. Kenneth Kinsey, the youngest sibling, highlights the unique blend of blues, funk, rock, and reggae that characterizes their sound and remains thankful for the education life on the road with his family provided.
