BMG Secures the Recorded Music Catalog of French Icon Alain Chamfort

Published December 21, 2023

BMG recently made a notable acquisition in the music industry by securing the recorded music catalog of Alain Chamfort, a revered French musician and composer. Alain Chamfort, whose popularity soared with classics like Manureva, La Fièvre Dans Le Sang, and Géant, is celebrated for his contributions to the pop music scene since the 1970s.

A Rich Portfolio of Hits

The acquisition by BMG encompasses 13 studio albums out of Chamfort's extensive library of 21 albums, some of which include popular titles like Poses, Amour Année Zéro, Tendres Fièvres, and Secrets Glacés. Spanning over five decades, Chamfort's work has been a testament to his versatility and ability to resonate with audiences.

The Future with BMG

Further solidifying their partnership, Chamfort has come to an agreement with BMG for his upcoming recordings. This includes an EP produced by Sébastien Tellier set for release in January 2024, followed by what is announced as his final album, L’Impermanence. Fans can also look forward to reissues of Chamfort's classic albums under BMG's guidance.

An Illustrious Musical Journey

Alain Chamfort rose to fame after beginning his career as a pianist and backing musician for other French artists in the 70s. His collaboration with the legendary lyricist Serge Gainsbourg on the album Rock’n Rose, which featured the hit Baby Lou, marked a turning point that led to more collaborations and chart-topping songs.

Corporate Strategy and Ambitions

BMG's purchase of Alain Chamfort's catalog aligns with its strategy to invest substantially in music rights, with expectations to allocate around USD $400 million towards similar acquisitions in 2023. Sylvain Gazaignes, BMG Managing Director France, expresses the company's commitment to preserving and promoting musical legacies not just in France, but globally.

BMG's Expansion Through Acquisitions

This move follows BMG's pattern of growing its portfolio, which includes recent procurements of catalogs from artists like Martin Solveig and stakes in the rights to the band Nena's work. This year alone, BMG has also acquired the catalogs of other high-profile artists such as The Hollies, Jet, and The Chemical Brothers, adding to their already diverse collection of music rights from internationally acclaimed artists.
