Concertgoers File Lawsuit Against Madonna Over Late Concert Start Time

Published January 18, 2024

In New York City, two men were looking forward to enjoying Madonna's 'Celebration' tour concert. However, the anticipation turned to frustration when the show at Barclays Center started much later than scheduled, prompting them to sue the music icon for not taking the stage on time.

Late Start Sparks Legal Action

Michael Fellows from Brooklyn and Jonathan Hadden of the Bronx, who had tickets for the show on December 13, were disappointed when Madonna began her performance well after 10:45 p.m., despite the tickets stating an 8:30 p.m. start. This led to inconvenience due to limited nighttime transportation options after the concert ended at 1 a.m.

Not just a minor inconvenience, the delay also impacted their next-day commitments. According to the concertgoers, they had early morning work and family obligations, turning the event into a less than festive experience. As a result, they have taken legal steps against Madonna, concert promoter Live Nation, and Barclays Center, alleging that they've engaged in deceptive practices by advertising an early start time they knew wouldn't be honored.

Breach of Contract Claimed

Fellows and Hadden claim in their lawsuit that there was a clear breach of contract when Madonna failed to perform at the agreed-upon time. They're pursuing class action status, believing they are not the only fans who faced this issue during the 'Celebration' tour. The lawsuit has been filed without specifying the amount in damages sought.

The history of Madonna's late performance starts precede this event, with similar incidents reported in other cities such as Washington, D.C. and Boston, suggesting a pattern to the artists' late show-starts.

This isn't Madonna's first brush with lawsuits over concert timings. Previous legal actions were taken during her 2019 'Madame X' tour, with one Florida man dropping his lawsuit a month after filing. Another case involving two Brooklyn fans was settled in 2020.

The world-renowned pop star had to delay the beginning of the 'Celebration Tour' due to a severe bacterial infection but started it off in London's O2 Arena in October.

Representatives for Madonna, Live Nation, and Barclays Center have not yet responded to inquiries about the lawsuit.
