Controversy Over K-pop Concert Proceeding After Japan Earthquake

Published January 2, 2024

Despite a major earthquake jolting Japan, the organizers of the K-pop concert 'K-pop MasterzXKross vol.3' have faced public scrutiny for moving forward with the scheduled event. The show went on on Tuesday, not long after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck, raising concerns among fans regarding safety and appropriacy.

Backlash from Fans Amidst Earthquake Recovery

Shortly after the earthquake occurred in the Ishikawa prefecture, which lies approximately 250 kilometers from Nagoya, the site of the concert, fans expressed their apprehensions. Social media platform X saw a flood of messages calling for the event's cancellation, citing the potential dangers and ongoing recovery efforts.

Event Organizers Decide to Continue

Despite the public outcry, the concert hosted by Birdman and Entertainment Next proceeded at the Vantelin Dome Nagoya. A statement from the organizers claimed that they had made the decision to continue after 'careful consideration,' assuring that the safety of all participants was taken into account. However, not all fans were convinced, and the debate on the appropriateness of such a decision in the aftermath of a natural disaster continues.

Performances by Top K-pop Acts

The concert featured performances from popular K-pop groups including aespa, Boynextdoor, Enhypen, and &team, with actor Park Seo-joon also making an appearance. Despite the exciting lineup, the contentious choice to hold the event has overshadowed what would otherwise be a celebratory occasion.
