Cal Poly Humboldt Hosts a Vibrant Faculty Concert to Kick Off the Spring Semester

Published January 25, 2024

The Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt is excited to announce the 'Welcome to Spring Semester Faculty Concert' scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. Audiences can experience the concert live at the Fulkerson Recital Hall at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Tickets are available for purchase at $15 for the general public and $5 for Cal Poly Humboldt students with a valid ID. Children can also attend for $5. Additionally, there is a paid livestream option for $7. Those interested can acquire tickets at the event or buy them online in advance at the official arts center.

The concert will showcase a lineup of talented faculty members and guest artists. One of the featured pieces is 'Amid Hills, Beneath Rains' by composer Isaac Smith, which will have a brass ensemble playing pivotal roles. The ensemble includes exceptional performances from trumpets to tuba with various faculty musicians participating.

Another highlight of the night will be 'Different Vibes' by Cal Poly Humboldt's own Brian Post. This piece, performed by MJ Fabian on vibraphone, is rooted in the minimalist music tradition, bringing out the distinctive resonances of the Pythagorean tuning.

The evening will also honor the classic operatics, with soprano Elisabeth Harrington performing an aria from Puccini's 'La Bohème,' accompanied by pianist John Chernoff. Other classical music moments include 'Élégie op.24' and 'Vocalise' performed by a trio of faculty artists.

For a touch of humor, 'The Song That No One Likes,' a parody of typical Broadway numbers, will be performed and promises to bring a comedic relief to the audience.

The recital concludes with the 'Passacaglia,' a piece where a repeating bass line is used to create a sense of continuity. The music, composed by faculty member MJ Fabian, utilizes both a cello, played by Garrick Woods, and a unique percussion arrangement, where 'found objects' replace traditional instruments for a novel sound experience.

With a mix of traditional and innovative musical works, the faculty concert aims to provide an entertaining and enriching experience for all who attend. For more information regarding this and future performances, music enthusiasts can follow Cal Poly Humboldt Music's social media page.
