Highlights of New Music in January 2024

Published January 29, 2024

January 2024 brought with it a shower of new music, charming listeners with fresh tunes from various artists. The music scene was brightened by the likes of The Smile, Katy Kirby, and Waxahatchee, whose contributions stood out, offering melodious retreats and establishing themselves as some of the month's best.

The Smile - Wall Of Eyes

The Smile returned with their second album Wall Of Eyes, showcasing a rockier approach reminiscent of Radiohead's classic style. The album features an eight-minute track titled 'Bending Hectic', which mirrors the complexity of earlier epics like 'Paranoid Android', as well as songs such as 'Read The Room' and 'Friend Of A Friend' that could easily fit into the OK Computer era. Thom Yorke's velvet voice and Jonny Greenwood's versatile guitar tunes are at the forefront, making for a comforting listening experience, particularly on cold winter days.

Katy Kirby - Blue Raspberry

Brooklyn-based artist Katy Kirby's newest offering, Blue Raspberry, continues to unravel its depths with each listen. Kirby favors a minimalist approach with songs that may initially appear simple but blossom into more complex, emotionally resonant pieces over time, much like her previous album Cool Dry Place. Kirby's music is an exercise in subtlety, resonating with listeners in a profound yet quietly powerful manner.

Waxahatchee feat. MJ Lenderman - 'Right Back To It'

Katie Crutchfield, also known as Waxahatchee, collaborated with MJ Lenderman on the track 'Right Back To It', a song so captivating it could easily be called the favorite of the year thus far. Accompanied by a music video featuring Crutchfield in a boat with Lenderman, the song hints at the direction of Waxahatchee's anticipated album, Tigers Blood, set to release in March.

Rosali - 'Rewind'

'Rewind' by Rosali is another standout track, prefacing the artist's forthcoming album Bite Down. Those interested in Rosali's music are encouraged to explore her previous work, including the 2021 album No Medium.

David Nance & Mowed Sound - 'Mock The Hours'

Nebraska's rock scene is well-represented by David Nance & Mowed Sound, who share a collaborative history with Rosali. Their latest sounds range from the powerful 'Mock The Hours' to other tracks that blend potent rock influences with quieter, more introspective moments. Nance's upcoming album promises to be a diverse and engaging listen.

Glass Beach - Plastic Death

Glass Beach’s second album, Plastic Death, continues the band's energetic exploration of progressive sounds, this time embracing a more pronounced prog-rock aesthetic. The album presents a frenetic and inventive energy that fans of varied music genres may find enthralling.

Phosphorescent - 'Revelator'

Matthew Houck, known as Phosphorescent, returns with 'Revelator', a track off his upcoming album. Houck's songwriting continues to delve into themes of human existence with poetic finesse and is a promising addition to his discography.

Labi Siffre - 'Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying'

Film enthusiasts and music lovers alike have embraced Labi Siffre's timeless track 'Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying', particularly following its inclusion in last year's hit movie The Holdovers. It stands as a nostalgic reminder of the song's enduring appeal.
