Green Island Festival Set to Enliven Hulme With Music and Arts

Published March 1, 2024

Hulme is set to host the vibrant Green Island Festival this summer. This event is a celebration of grassroots music and arts and will take place at the delightful Hulme Garden Centre and historic NIAMOS theatre building. Festival-goers can look forward to day parties and afterparties sprinkled across dates in June, July, and September.

Celebration at Historic and Green Spaces

The festival will span across three separate dates: June 15, July 27, and September 7, offering attendees a peaceful hideaway from the bustling city life. The Hulme Garden Centre and the iconic NIAMOS, known for hosting a performance by the legendary soul singer Nina Simone in 1991, will serve as the seminal locations for these festivities.

Eclectic Line-Up Awaits

With tickets available for purchase, the Green Island Festival is preparing to showcase a diverse line-up. Performances will include the Senegalese group Def MaMa Def, electronic ensemble Afriquoi, and the versatile David Walters. Attendees will also be treated to arts groups like Ku-umba, acts such as Lovescene, the afro-funk rhythms of Afro Cluster, and the soulful Victoria Jane.

Stages of Creativity

The Main Stage at NIAMOS will feature a variety of takeovers from curators such as FAT OUT and Lavender Rodriquez, while the Bandstand stage within the Hulme Garden Centre will host talents including Chunky and Ruf Dug. The Marquee Stage is dedicated to showcasing up-and-coming bands like Benita & The Groove, Nina Rosa, and Jocelyn Knight, whereas the Forest Stage will vibrate to the beats of Supernature Disco and other notable scene selectors.

Hidden Gems and Culinary Delights

Apart from the main attractions, there's a Selector Stage, discreetly placed to play vinyl records on a top-notch sound system. Hope House Gallery’s Cosmic Slop and Apricot Ballrooms will be among those taking over this 'secret' stage. Food and drink offerings will line Warwick Street, with a variety of traders to be announced as the festival approaches.

Family Fun and Afterparty Energy

The festival entices not just music lovers but families as well, with a range of activities planned for all ages. Post-festival hours can be spent at afterparties held at the YES venue in the city centre.

A Commitment to Local Art and Global Sounds

Green Island Festival champions diversity in the arts and is seen as a platform that mirrors society's mosaic. George McGirr, one of the cofounders, expressed joy at providing a space for both local artists and global influences, emphasizing the festival's blend of local and international cultural experiences.
