Published February 17, 2024

The highly anticipated Salsa Festival in Cuba is soon upon us, an event eagerly awaited by dancers and enthusiasts of the genre. Scheduled to take place from the 20th to the 25th of February 2024, the core location of the festivities will be the renowned Club 500, situated in the capital. The venue will host a vibrant lineup of 20 orchestras, boasting both local Cuban talent and international flair.

The Heart and Soul of Cuban Music

With the prestigious Maykel Blanco serving as the Festival's Honorary President, the eighth edition of this beloved event enjoys sponsorship from several organizations, notably the Carnavales Company, the Havana Provincial Culture Directorate, ARTEX S.A., and MB Producciones. Paradiso Agency is recognized as the official partner, and there's additional support from the Ministry of Culture of Cuba and the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM).

ICM President, Indira Fajardo, expressed her enthusiasm for the Festival, which not only showcases Cuban artists but also welcomes international celebrities and audiences. Fajardo noted the importance of the event in promoting the visibility of creative arts within the realm of popular music, providing a platform for orchestras to present new works.

Cultural Education and Inclusivity

The festival is set to reach beyond the concert stage and into academia. Maite Vigoa, the Director of Culture in Havana, revealed that the Festival would extend to the city's five music schools. A range of activities, such as masterclasses and dialogues with musicians who graduated from these institutions, aims to foster engagement and education. The Ministry of Culture is keen on incorporating an educational perspective into all of their events, nurturing future music professionals.

Fajardo underlined the significance of this educational element, emphasizing its importance for artistic students to experience live performances and to be immersed in a rich and vibrant atmosphere. By combining professional insights with student involvement, the Festival serves as a potent learning experience.

Global Influence and Community Engagement

The Festival also celebrates the contribution of DJs and dance academies in popularizing Cuban music worldwide. Renowned international DJs, such as DJ Ray García and DJ Timbalero, will join the event, alongside dance instructors like Maykel Fonts and Yanet Fuentes, to lead dance workshops.

Edith Massola, the Festival's Artistic Director, applauded the opportunity for Cuban orchestras to participate in a unifying event. She highlighted the resilience of the Festival, which has expanded despite challenging times, providing joy and entertainment for the Cuban people.

Performance slots are strategically distributed over five evenings, ensuring that four groups take the stage each night. Among the headliners are Giro López and his Orquesta 8 y más from Puerto Rico and, from eastern Cuba, maestro Pachy Naranjo alongside the legendary Original de Manzanillo, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Tickets for the Salsa Festival will be available at Astral, Acapulco, and Ambassador cinemas, as well as the Pabellón Cuba and through the La Papeleta cultural promotion platform, priced at 500 pesos. Ticket sales can also be arranged via telephone for workplaces and universities, with special discounts for students.
