Childish Gambino Faces Accusations of Mistreatment from 'Awaken, My Love!' Cover Team

Published December 28, 2023

Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, is facing troubling accusations from collaborators who helped create the visual art for his album 'Awaken, My Love!'. Giannina Antonette Oteto, the cover model, has claimed that she and others involved in the project were mistreated and deceived, particularly regarding payment issues.

Mistreatment Allegations

Oteto, who graced the album cover in a detailed beaded headdress, expressed her grievances publicly, stating that the team, which included the stylist and makeup artist, was exploited and provided with false promises by Gambino's team. In a deleted Facebook post, she detailed her experiences and indicated that while they were awarded low pay, they were assured of receiving residuals that never materialized.

Responses to the Allegations

Oteto further claimed that the only person who did receive residuals was the creator of the headpiece, a white woman who was not actively present during the set but was acknowledged for her contribution. This reveal came as a disappointment to Oteto and her colleagues, who had invested love and pride in the project as black artists. She added that all communication attempts made by her lawyers have been ignored by Glover's team.

While these allegations pose serious questions about the treatment of collaborators in the music industry, Childish Gambino has not publicly responded to these claims, and representatives for the artist have yet to comment.
