Santa Cruz Welcomes Award-Nominated Music Act

Coming straight from the excitement of being nominated for a Juno Award, Okan, an Afro-Cuban duo based in Toronto, is set to bring their unique sound to Kuumbwa Jazz on Thursday. The duo, comprising Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne, were part of Jane Burnett's Grammy-nominated ensemble Maqueque and are recognized for their rich blend of folk, jazz, and world rhythms. Their musical themes span immigration, social justice, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Okan's Acclaimed Musical Journey

Okan has claimed a Juno Award for their album "Espiral" back in 2020 and continues to captivate the music scene with their latest project, "Okantomi," which confronts topics like political oppression and minority inequities. This album has stood out as one of CBC Music's top albums of 2023 and is currently nominated for Global Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards.
