Gloria Scott and Bill Saxton Enthrall Audience at Ukiah's Jazz Festival

Published March 7, 2024

In a lively celebration of jazz, T-Up's mini golf course was transformed into a vibrant nightclub to host Ken and Essence McCormick's inaugural Jazz Festival this past Saturday. The day's standout performer, Gloria Scott, delivered a captivating show. Scott, known for her collaborations with the likes of Sly Stone, Barry White, and Ike and Tina Turner's Ikettes, enchanted the audience with her powerful and soulful voice. She wasn't alone onstage; Scott was accompanied by the harmonious backing of vocalist Machiko and the dynamic play of Paul Kemp on keyboards, though Kemp was not pictured.

Bill Saxton Brings Harlem's Jazz to Ukiah

The festival's headliner, Bill Saxton, a heralded hard bop tenor saxophonist hailing from Harlem, provided a remarkable performance as well. His rendition of straight-ahead jazz has been described as nothing short of 'the best jazz heard anywhere,' and his act did not disappoint. Saxton's talents were complemented by the musical prowess of John Simon on keyboards, Jim Dooley on the horn, Trevor Kinsel with his standup bass, and Gabriel Yañes who skillfully played the drums. Saxton's set helped cement the festival as a destination for exquisite jazz performances.
