The Resilient Journey of Theophylline Mulbah: From Liberia to Tunisia through Music

Published December 29, 2023

The road to Tunisia has been long and winding for Liberian rapper Theophylline Mulbah, yet it is within this journey that he has discovered not just new horizons, but a deeper engagement with music. On a rain-drenched street in the heart of Tunis, Mulbah shares his commitment to his craft, stating, "I am seriously pursuing my musical career. I am a rapper."

Perseverance Through a Perilous Path

Mulbah's odyssey began two years ago, initiating from his homeland of Liberia as he charted a course through several West African countries. His movement was methodical, making strategic stops in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Mali, and Algeria. During each pause, he gathered funds to advance further on his path, ultimately setting foot in Tunis during August.

In Algeria, Mulbah lingered the longest—over a year—to immerse himself in new experiences and cultures. Throughout his time there, Mulbah channeled his experiences into his music, recording songs and reflecting on his life's journey with a focus on his past, present, and the societal issues that weigh on him.

Confronting Challenges Head-On

For Mulbah, leaving Liberia was a decision propelled by economic strife and the pursuit of self-improvement. After unsuccessful attempts to secure a visa to France, Mulbah embraced the arduous route over land, trusting in the resilience and reach of his Liberian passport. His time in Algeria was eye-opening, pushing him to understand the plight faced by many undocumented migrants, and honing in on his destination of Europe via Tunisia.

Encountering racism became an everyday ordeal for Mulbah in Algeria and Tunisia. He recounts "I had expected and prepared my mind for it. In whatever environment you find yourself in, you either quit or abide," expressing his choice to endure and persevere.

This narrative is part of a series painting a picture of various refugees from distinct backgrounds, united in their encounters with uncertainty and anticipation as they transition into the year 2024.
