The Manhattan Transfer Embarks on Farewell Tour with a Show in San Diego

Published December 10, 2023

The Manhattan Transfer, a pioneer jazz and pop quartet, is embarking on a farewell world tour, marking the end of an era for the group that's been active for over five decades. Their adieu performance reaches San Diego, promising an unforgettable night for fans and newcomers alike.

A Legacy of Diverse Styles

Since their beginnings in 1972, started by the now-deceased Tim Hauser, the ensemble has soared through an array of genres. From Brazilian jazz and R&B to pop, a cappella, and vocalese, their dynamic sound has captivated audiences, accrued 11 Grammy Awards, and firmly positioned them in popular culture.

The Current Line-Up

From the original cast, alto Janis Siegel and tenor Alan Paul continue to grace the stage, while soprano Cheryl Bentyne, who joined in 1979, and bass Trist Curless, who officially came on board in 2014, complete the quartet. The latter offering an enthusiast's zest, having long admired the group's variety before becoming a member.

The Challenge of Reverence

Facing a vast repertoire, some older pieces pose a challenge to perfect and reintroduce. Nonetheless, they are supported by a proficient band, including long-time collaborator, pianist Yaron Gershovsky, as well as recent additions Boris Kozlov on bass, Ross Pederson on drums, and guitarist Pete McCann.

Pioneering Hits and Influence

The group's rise to fame saw them merge jazz with pop hits, leading to significant accolades such as multiple Grammys. Notably, their 1981 album 'Mecca for Moderns' made history by winning Grammys in both the jazz and popular categories—an industry first in the same year.

Their influence extends beyond their active years, with artists and educators like Sara Gazarek acknowledging the Manhattan Transfer's pivotal role in advancing jazz-informed vocal music. Their legacy continues to inspire generation after generation.
