Young Musicians to Shine at Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra's Competition

The Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra is hosting the annual Jeanne Selander Memorial Concerto Competition, offering a platform for young musicians to showcase their talent. Chosen through auditions held on January 13, with a backup date of January 20 in case of snow, the winner will be featured as a soloist at the Family Concert on March 16. Additionally, a $500 scholarship provided by Falcetti Pianos awaits the emerging talent. Eager contenders must submit their applications by December 23 and pay a $35 fee. Eligibility is open to those under 18 or high school students within a 50-mile radius of Lowell as of May 2024. The repertoire selection includes any notable work fit for solo and orchestra, except for certain pieces from the Suzuki repertoire. It is important to note that accompanists will not be permitted during the auditions. The competition pays homage to Selander, a founding violinist of the LPO, who began the tradition of fostering youth engagement in the arts.

Merrimack River Watershed Council Wins Major Settlement

The U.S. Department of Justice has recently finalized a $600,000 settlement with the Merrimack River Watershed Council (MRWC). This win is rooted in a lawsuit against Schnitzer Steel and its subsidiaries, which were charged with non-compliance with the Clean Water Act. The MRWC is set to direct this influx of funds towards crucial environmental initiatives such as rehabilitating the river's banks and curbing stormwater-induced pollution. Curt Rogers of MRWC emphasizes the stipulated amount underlines the hefty costs linked to environmental transgressions and is a positive step towards securing a clean and thriving Merrimack River. This legal victory, brought forth by the Conservation Law Foundation, thus reinforces the importance of preserving our natural resources.
