Amherstburg Honors Black History Month with Windsor Symphony Orchestra Performances

Published February 2, 2024

In honor of Black History Month, the Amherstburg Freedom Museum is proudly presenting two special concerts performed by the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO). These musical events form a central part of the community's celebrations for the month.

Singing with Flo Family Concert

On a Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., families will have the opportunity to attend the Singing with Flo concert conducted by Francisco Hernández Bolaños. This event will showcase the incredible talents of vocalist Florine Mdimubandi alongside the Windsor Essex Youth Choir. Together, they will bring to life the compositions of renowned black musicians, such as Scott Joplin and Oscar Peterson. The interactive and engaging family concert aims to educate and inspire audiences.

Korin Thomas-Smith Sings Mozart

Late in the month, on February 23, another concert by the WSO will take place at the museum. Korin Thomas-Smith Sings Mozart will see the orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Robert Franz, delivering performances of music by 18th-century composers. The highlight of the evening will be Thomas-Smith's rendition of arias from Mozart's masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Both of these events signal the community's dedication to celebrating and understanding the rich history and contributions of black artists to the world of classical music. Tickets for the concerts can be obtained from the WSO's official website.
